PLAY TO WIN! CHOOSING GROWTH OVER FEAR!
WANTED: People to undertake hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, Honor and Recognition in case of success.
So starts the first chapter of the book Play to Win! by Hersch Wilson & Larry Wilson, describing an ad placed by the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton looking for people to accompany him on his famous expedition abord the Endurance to the south pole.
And so begins the tale of the “hero’s journey” which lit a spark of an idea that has continued to burn throughout my life: that we are meant for more, that our work can light us up, that we can find meaning and purpose throughout our lives, yes even in our jobs.
Play to Win has the subtitle Choosing Growth over Fear and it truly is a book that changed my life. And I know people say that all the time; this book or this thing changed my life, but this one really did.
And if you have had this experience yourself, then you know that it's not the book itself really that makes the difference, it’s a combination of the moment in time, the version of you that showed up then, your readiness to receive information , all of it together that led to the "life changingness" of it all and created that pivotal moment in time.
Early in my career I was given this book as part of a corporate retreat and it was the first time I became aware of the power of meaning and purpose in the workplace and how thriving individuals can not only become more engaged with their work but also positively impact an organization’s bottom line.
And so began my own “hero’s journey” and many years later I finally took the leap to make my full time work in the world helping individuals, teams and organizations create positive change.
Today and every day, I’m choosing growth over fear. And you can too.
So I want to know, what’s your life changing book?
